Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Course and Learning Objectives

Suggested Grade Level: 10-11

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a critical thinking class that is an extension of epistemology and examines the manner in which humans know something and the various justifications and barriers to knowledge. The key question of TOK is “How do you know?” The study of TOK does not seek to present itself as an English only class but seeks to draw upon all the different areas of knowledge the students study at school. Embedded within the course are means for forming a coherent argument in essay writing and presentation skills. TOK seeks to help advanced students with challenging coursework and prepare them for institutions of higher learning.

Theory of Knowledge Learning Outcomes

This course aims to create opportunities for students to hone strong thinking and communication skills but also to foster balanced open-mindedness and help students become more active risk-takers. It aims to develop the whole person aspect  and not just the student part of an individual learner.

This course is about critical thinking and inquiring into the process of knowing rather than learning a specific body of knowledge. This course examines how we know what we claim to know. It does this by encouraging students to analyze knowledge claims and explore knowledge questions.

The curriculum can be understood to consist of the following.

A An examination of knowledge itself, through the linked lenses of both personal knowledge and shared knowledge.

B Eight ways of knowing (language, sense perception, emotion, reason, imagination, faith intuition, memory) All these will have time devoted to them but only four will be studied in depth.

C Eight Areas of Knowledge (mathematics, natural sciences, human social sciences, the arts, history, ethics, religious knowledge systems and indigenous knowledge systems) While all these will have time devoted to them, only 6 will be studied in depth.
