Literature English Course and Learning Objectives

Suggested Grade Level: 10-11

Literature as an art form is intended to challenge the hard edges of reality. As long as story-telling has existed as an art form it uses keen observation and fact in it’s creation of character, setting and interpretations of societies in spite of it being a fiction. Where does human and global nature leave off and literature begin? Does writing fiction actually give greater freedoms to a writer than one who writes about facts? This course shall be intended as means for students to improve their reading, creative and essay writing skills in forming arguments about a piece of literature or a perspective.

English Literature Learning Outcomes

This literature course fundamental task is to use reading of genuine English stories and writing about them to enhance ESL learners reading and writing abilities in English. The course is designed to stimulate their creativity as well. The course focuses on the elements of literature that writers use in language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers. Throughout the course, there will be constant employment on the study of the literary tools that writers use. Writing instruction will include attention to developing ideas in clear, coherent and persuasive language; a study of the elements of style; and attention to precision and correctness as necessary. Through the course, the students will write timed essays and longer out of class papers. The course composition will be focused on Constructivism with students completing a variety of tasks centered upon the themes presented by a story. The vocabulary will be quite advanced for students wishing to take this course, both course specific vocabulary and other content based vocabulary.
